MAKE LOVE NOT WAR

Make love not war was a phrase/slogan commonly associated with the American counterculture of the 1960s. It was used primarily by those who were opposed to the Vietnam War. The slogan was featured in John Lennon's 1973 song Mind Games.

“After I was violently assaulted my initial reaction was revenge. But then, after a few days I realized that a violent response was not going to solve the problem. Instead, I forgave my attackers, and decided to move on.

This reaction allowed me to lift the heavy burden of hate and anger. I felt free, and even happier than before I was attacked.

Perhaps the assault was a wake-up call for me. Before it I was feeling frustrated and antagonistic, ready to argue with anyone and felt as though it was my responsibility to tell people off.

I also realized that I should try to lead by example and look at my own faults and flaws too.”

FOR DISCUSSION:

1.        What wars do you know about in history (world history and Chinese history)? What started the wars? Who was involved? What was the outcome?

2.        Was the loss of life worth the victory?

3.        What does ‘spoils of war’ mean?

4.        In a fight/war do you agree or disagree that both parties lose?

5.        Have you ever been in an argument? How did you resolve it?

6.        Have you ever been in a fistfight? Do you think it could have been avoided if you have taken the time to talk through the problem or kept a cool head/jai dee (Thai for ‘cool heart’).

7.        What current wars do you know about? What is your feeling about them?

8.        Do you believe we will face WW3 in our lifetime?

9.        If there were more women as leaders of countries do you think there would be less war?

10.   Would you rather ‘make love’ or ‘make war’?
